Open Paper on anti-piracy

December 20th, 2004 at 11:05 pm by johnsee (Online, Tech & Science)

A Premonition of things to come
What will be the next anti-piracy move by the RIAA/MPAA?

Many of us are wondering what the next action by these organizations to impair our rights even further will be. I most definitely have been for quite a while for a simple reason: If we know what they might be trying to do next then maybe we can try to beat them to the punch. At first glance of the actions these two anti-piracy giants have already put forth it looks more like random assaults than meticulous chess like advances by a Mr Burn’s type figure. But in actuality it seems their last move against piracy seems very laid out and will be the worst to date.

Half US wants Muslim resrictions [news.com.au]

December 19th, 2004 at 11:24 pm by johnsee (Around the World)

“NEARLY half of all Americans believe the US government should restrict the civil liberties of Muslim Americans, according to a nationwide poll.

The survey conducted by Cornell University also found that Republicans and people who described themselves as highly religious were more apt to support curtailing Muslims’ civil liberties than Democrats or people who are less religious.

Researchers also found that respondents who paid more attention to television news were more likely to fear terrorist attacks and support limiting the rights of Muslim Americans.

The survey found 44 per cent favoured at least some restrictions on the civil liberties of Muslim Americans. Forty-eight per cent said liberties should not be restricted in any way.

The survey showed 27 per cent of respondents supported requiring all Muslim Americans to register where they lived with the federal government. Twenty-two per cent favoured racial profiling to identify potential terrorist threats. And 29 per cent thought undercover agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer organisations to keep checks on their activities and fundraising.”

Alleged US Torture Flights

December 19th, 2004 at 11:17 pm by johnsee (Around the World)

AN executive jet is being used by the American intelligence agencies to fly terrorist suspects to countries that routinely use torture in their prisons.

The movements of the Gulfstream 5 leased by agents from the United States defence department and the CIA are detailed in confidential logs obtained by The Sunday Times which cover more than 300 flights.

Countries with poor human rights records to which the Americans have delivered prisoners include Egypt, Syria and Uzbekistan, according to the files. The logs have prompted allegations from critics that the agency is using such regimes to carry out “torture by proxy — a charge denied by the American government.

Some of the information from the suspects is said to have been used by MI5 and MI6, the British intelligence services. The admissibility in court of evidence gained under torture is being considered in the House of Lords in an appeal by foreign-born prisoners at Belmarsh jail, south London, against their detention without trial on suspicion of terrorism.

More is known about the Gulfstream, which has the registration number N379P and can carry 14 passengers. Movements detailed in the logs can be matched with several sightings of the Gulfstream at airports when terrorist suspects have been bundled away by US counterterrorist agents.

Analysis of the plane’s flight plans, covering more than two years, shows that it always departs from Washington DC. It has flown to 49 destinations outside America, including the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba and other US military bases, as well as Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Morocco, Afghanistan, Libya and Uzbekistan.

Police given computer spy powers [SMH]

December 14th, 2004 at 7:03 pm by johnsee (Australia)

Federal and state police now have the power to use computer spyware to gather evidence in a broad range of investigations after legal changes last week.

The Surveillance Devices Act allows police to obtain a warrant to use software surveillance technologies, including systems that track and log keystrokes on a computer keyboard. The law applies to the Australian Federal Police and to state police investigating Commonwealth offences.

Critics have called the law rushed and imbalanced, saying police will be able to secretly install software to monitor email, online chats, word processor and spreadsheets entries and even bank personal identification numbers and passwords.

December 8th, 2004 at 7:30 pm by johnsee (Around the World)

Forty-six eminent figures including military men, ex-diplomats and bishops have written to Tony Blair urging a inquiry into civilian deaths in Iraq.

It comes after a study in medical journal the Lancet said nearly 100,000 died following the invasion. The study, by US and Iraqi researchers, suggested the risk of violent death was higher after the war than before.UK ministers rejected October’s Lancet figures, but have offered no alternative estimate of their own.

Independent inquiry

The letter’s publication marks the launch of a new campaign by health charity Medact and the Iraq Body Count project. Names on the letter include retired General Sir Hugh Beech, the Bishop of Coventry, and an ex-ambassador to Iraq. It also includes the former assistant chief of the defence staff Lord Garden and writer Harold Pinter.

Romantic First Lines, Non Romantic Second Lines

December 6th, 2004 at 11:06 pm by johnsee (Humour)

Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss
but I only slept with you because I was pissed

I thought that I could love no other
Until, that is, I met your brother

Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are
you.
But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar
bowl’s empty and so is your head.

Of loving beauty you float with grace
If only you could hide your face

Kind, intelligent, loving and hot
This describes everything you are not

I want to feel your sweet embrace
But don’t take that paper bag off of your face

I love your smile, your face, and your eyes-
Damn, I’m good at telling lies!

My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife:
Marrying you screwed up my life

I see your face when I am dreaming
That’s why I always wake up screaming

My love you take my breath away
What have you stepped in to smell this way

My feelings for you no words can tell
Except for maybe “go to hell”

What inspired this amorous rhyme?
Two parts vodka, one part lime

Update

December 1st, 2004 at 3:55 pm by johnsee (Site News)

I’ve changed the site around a bit. I moved my blog off the front page. It used to be well… not private… but not as public as it was now the site gets so much traffic. Anyone can still read it… you just have to click the little link on the left. This front page will now be update much more rarely… and for the really general stuff. On the subject of traffic… I’m getting alot. I had over 190,000 hits the other month. This all costs money… luckily an absolute legend of a guy provides me with hosting… so it costs me nothing, but with all the traffic… its starting to cost him. The privacy tools are now gone. The main people using them were my mates from school. Most my mates are finished… the rest are on holidays. They probably won’t be back ever again… depending on my uni net. The googleads are going to dissapear in the next few days, and some other ads will appear. These are for the people who give me hosting… check them out!

If you have any other suggestions comment or post something in the shoutbox on the site. The shoutbox is now pretty heavily censored… sorry. Thats it for now… time to change some more stuff.
