Taxi Turbine Mobile Phone Recharger?

August 29th, 2005 at 2:31 pm By johnsee (Around the World, Tech & Science)

Taxi Roof Cellphone Charger CabIt looks like the crazy japs are at it again. Whilst at first glance it might appear like a taxi with a jet turbine strapped to the roof for a high-speed James Bond chase, it’s actually a cellphone recharger. The original page is in japanese, but the device basically generated electricity so long as the fan is spinning, and this charge is delivered into the cab in order to charge the occupants phone. The biggest downsize of the device is that at present it only charges so long as the cab is running. For the small amount of power this thing generates, and the cost that must be associated with creating and installing, it’s beyond me why they don’t take the power directly from the car battery. Publicity from stories like this I guess :)
