Its 2001… and the world cries as apple releases a shitty product called the iPod
In 2001 Apple released a new product they called the iPod. They had promised to release something revolutionary, and instead they brought a new mp3 player to a overcrowded market. Its hard to imagine 4 years later that the iPod has brought Apple back into the mainstream, lifted their PC sales and now holds 75% of the mp3 player market. You would never ever believe it based on the reactions on the macrumours forum after the release of the first generation iPod:
"It’s a shame that Apple doesn’t have market awareness and released that yet again, has "missed the boat" before spending R&D, time and money on creating this now-novel audio device."
"All I can say is that I’m really disappointed. So much hype and anticipation that it was hardly "groundbreaking", moreso "heartbreaking". Actually I’d like to know how they could sensationalise such a product which is hardly new, apart from the "add-on" technologies such as internal hard-drive"
"This iPod is for spoil rich kids with insane parents or an Apple fan as fannatic as a Taliban. It has good features but forget about getting it for $399!!!! Never, who gets that thing is a very stupid person."
"iPoop… iCry. I was so hoping for something more."
"I still can’t believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!"
Me: Uhh, no!"

Oh how could so many people have been so wrong? And how could Apple have been so right!
I hope they all feel suitably stupid now.

My first computer was a Commodore 64 - it was crap (but it talked to me if I told it to).
My second computer was an Apple Macintosh - it was EVER so cool.
Then I got a new computer - some Windows based thing, and I kept on searching for the doors…
Now I am into cool things like iPods. I don’t give a crap if I never find its windows or doors, cause its just so FREAKING AWESOME that I don’t care.
GO APPLE!
GO iPOD
GO EVER SO COOL STUFF!!!

I think after the fact is easy to be be right. I have a question. I mean a real question that I hope someone will answer me. What is so good about the Ipod? I man I think it’s neat and I wouldn’t mind having one. I do think that success builds on itself (People get Ipods because it is so successfull) but there’s got to be something there in the first place. So whereas I agree it’s a good product can you tell me what makes it superior than tons of other MP3 players in the market? Why are you happy you got this rather than some other MP3 player? This is a real question and I hope somone answers

I think it’s because it’s so easy to use. The menu interface is incredibly simple to use, and isn’t bloated. It also looks cool. The white ear phones just yell ‘look at me, I have an iPod.’ Apple are the masters of hype. The OC is being obsessed over millions of teens across the world (hell, one of our OC articles has over 200 replies) and apple added a bit of product placement, with Seth and Ryan wandering around with iPods.
iTunes is also incredibly easy to use. At first the idea that plugging my iPod in would remove all my songs and only leave what was in my iTunes library annoyed me. Now however, I love it. Its makes it just so simply to change around your music.
In other news, I have since sold my iPod nano, whilst I loved it to bits, 4 gigs wasn’t quite enough for my liking, and the idea of video on my pod excites me. So I’m planning on ordering a video iPod in the next few weeks.

did you sell it on ebay? how much did you sell it for? also, why not wait a few months and see what apple does next with the ipod…
apple are being very clever and annoying. they are slowly bringing out new features each release. when they brought out the photo ipod, the refresh rate of the photos was amazing and it made me wonder if videos on ipods was going to be the next thing.. you will prob find that it will become like a new palm. or pda.. being able to access the net, email, I M programs etc.
the annoying this is, you buy an ipod, like you did Admin, and next thing they bring out something “bigger” and better… making you want to get that and ditch the nano or your current one. hence them being checky..

It’s a fashion accessory plain and simple. Say what you want about Apple, they sure know how to make a very sexy product, nevermind that it’s virtually the same as every other HDD-based mp3 player out there. Except it doesn’t have a radio. Or a removeable battery. Or a video media player (whoops they just recently released that ‘revolutionary’ feature didn’t they?). Or you have to use iTunes to install music on it.
But damn it looks sexy.
