Windows Live Messenger Beta Opened

March 15th, 2006 at 4:44 pm by johnsee (Online)

Microsoft has opened the doors to the general public to test their latest Messenger application and Live service. The new Windows LiveTM Messenger Beta is the next-generation MSN Messenger and, as always, it is free to download.
Over the past few months I’ve had about 50 people emailing me requesting invites, and even a few emailed me back feedback on it. (Not that I care, I don’t work for M$) The latest build is pretty good though, althought it’s still a tad buggy

You call THAT a bus?

March 12th, 2006 at 10:01 pm by johnsee (Around the World)

labrock220_04.jpgIn November 2004, a convoy of three Rhino Runners was on Route Irish when a suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden BMW between the first and second vehicles. At a distance of two meters from the second Rhino Runner the terrorist detonated more than 250 pounds of explosives creating a crater 6 feet wide and 2 feet deep. There was a dust cloud over 1,000 feet long. There were seventeen passengers and a driver on the second Rhino at the time of the explosion. There were no injuries at all in what the Army called a “massive explosion.”

Where The Bloody Hell Are You?

March 11th, 2006 at 4:58 pm by johnsee (Australia, Around the World, Television)

The media in Australia has been giving the poms a bit of flack lately over a tourism ad that involves the slogan “Where the bloody hell are you?” Now the word has become quite accepted in Australia, and after seeing a news article on it last night, one of the next TV ads I saw was actually an ad with a little girl saying ‘bloody hell’.

Now despite the complaints about the ad not being shown, I’m sure the Australian tourism department isn’t annoyed. In fact I suspect they are secretly thrilled. Ever seen Ken Park, a film banned in Australia? I have, and so have a lot of people I know. When something is banned it intrigues people, and even a few American blogs I know are posting about the banning of the ad in the UK. All of a sudden the ad is getting huge exposure, and they aren’t even paying any costs to get it put on TV. Viral marketing at its best!

X-Men 3 Final X-Men Movie

March 10th, 2006 at 9:11 am by johnsee (Movies)

collosus.PNGThe theatrical trailer has been released for X-Men 3. What’s interesting though, is that this is the final X-Men movie. Fox have announced that this will be the last X-Men movie made, with the movies to only be a trilogy. Now as much as I hate studios drawing out movies to make more and more sequels, X-Men is one movie I think could pull it off. The press release from Fox is as follows:

In X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, the final chapter in the “X-Men” motion picture trilogy, a “cure” for mutancy threatens to alter the course of history. For the first time, mutants have a choice: retain their uniqueness, though it isolates and alienates them, or give up their powers and become human. The opposing viewpoints of mutant leaders Charles Xavier, who preaches tolerance, and Magneto, who believes in the survival of the fittest, are put to the ultimate test - triggering the war to end all wars.”

You can find the trailer for the movie here

Is your Pet Mouse Sick? Lucky You!

March 6th, 2006 at 12:36 pm by johnsee (Tech & Science)

mouse.jpgWhen it comes to the price of mice, you pay more for defects. A mouse with arthritis runs close to $200; two pairs of epileptic mice can cost 10 times that. You want three blind mice? That’ll run you about $250. And for your own custom mouse, with the genetic modification of your choosing, expect to pay as much as $100,000.Always a mainstay of scientific research, mice have become a critical tool in the quest for new drugs and medical treatments.

It turns out that a mouse’s genes are so similar to a person’s that with proper manipulation — either by man or nature — they can produce an animal with an ailment akin to virtually any human medical condition. Mice with Alzheimer’s disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer and countless other ailments are being used to study both the illnesses themselves and potential treatments.

As many as 25 million mice are now used in experiments each year. Where do they come from?

From the mouse industry, of course.
