HDD disk is only spun up when new files are open, but all OS files and program files in use stay in hardstate cache, hence a power out doesn't make your programs close, you can just recomence what you were doing when you turn back on, and a shock to laptop won't cause headcrashes as easily cause head isn't active most of time.
