Terrorists Win

August 27th, 2006 at 5:01 pm by johnsee (Around the World)

There’s an excellent article on Wired that I think sums up my feelings on how paranoid the world is getting. It’s not a huge article but is well worth the read. A snippet:

On Aug. 19, a plane made an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida, after the crew became suspicious because two of the lavatory doors were locked. The plane was searched, but nothing was found. Meanwhile, a man who tampered with a bathroom smoke detector on a flight to San Antonio was cleared of terrorism, but only after having his house searched.

On Aug. 16, a woman suffered a panic attack and became violent on a flight from London to Washington, so the plane was escorted to the Boston airport by fighter jets. “The woman was carrying hand cream and matches but was not a terrorist threat,” said the TSA spokesman after the incident.

And on Aug. 18, a plane flying from London to Egypt made an emergency landing in Italy when someone found a bomb threat scrawled on an air sickness bag. Nothing was found on the plane, and no one knows how long the note was on board.

I’d like everyone to take a deep breath and listen for a minute.

The point of terrorism is to cause terror, sometimes to further a political goal and sometimes out of sheer hatred. The people terrorists kill are not the targets; they are collateral damage. And blowing up planes, trains, markets or buses is not the goal; those are just tactics.

Arabic Letters Now Make You a Terrorist

August 25th, 2006 at 10:32 pm by johnsee (Around the World)

When the Iraq war started a man by the name of Raed, an Iraqi continued to blog to the outside world exactly what was happening in his country. It was an incredible feat at the time as it gave first hand commentary superior to anything the media could dish out. Now, just a few days ago, the same man was refused to be allowed onto a flight until he removed a shirt that read “We Will Not Be Silent“…

Sportsgirl Stole A Threadless Design

August 22nd, 2006 at 1:03 am by Doc (Features, Australia)

As a follow-up to Johnsee’s article “Sportsgirl Stealing Designs or about to sell Threadless?“, I decided to go and get photos of one of the stores, tell my side of the story, and give my thoughts on what happened.

The Situation
My girlfriend and I were shopping at a particular shopping centre in Brisbane last week. She and I have become avid Threadless browsers and buyers over the past year, so we’ve become pretty familiar with all the designs that have been printed. As we went past a Sportsgirl store (a popular young women’s clothing franchise here in Australia) she noticed in the display window a “kissing birds” sticker that looked strangely familar:

Sportsgirl Store 1     Sportsgirl Store 2

Sportsgirl Store 3     'For The Birds' Threadless Shirt Design

The last picture is from a Threadless shirt called For The Birds, and, like all Threadless prints, was designed by a member of the Threadless.com community. It was created by Travis Matthew Stearns and submitted on 25 July 2005, so there’s definitely no confusion as to which one came first. Read the rest of this entry »

Would Liquids on a Plane Really Work?

August 18th, 2006 at 8:00 am by johnsee (Around the World, Tech & Science)

Once the plane is over the ocean, very discreetly bring all of your gear into the toilet. You might need to make several trips to avoid drawing attention. Once your kit is in place, put a beaker containing the peroxide / acetone mixture into the ice water bath (Champagne bucket), and start adding the acid, drop by drop, while stirring constantly. Watch the reaction temperature carefully. The mixture will heat, and if it gets too hot, you’ll end up with a weak explosive. In fact, if it gets really hot, you’ll get a premature explosion possibly sufficient to kill you, but probably no one else.

After a few hours - assuming, by some miracle, that the fumes haven’t overcome you or alerted passengers or the flight crew to your activities - you’ll have a quantity of TATP with which to carry out your mission. Now all you need to do is dry it for an hour or two.

Sportsgirl Stealing Designs or about to sell Threadless?

August 14th, 2006 at 6:51 pm by johnsee (Australia)

Sportsgirl is a huge clothing chain in Australia. Threadless is a huge online clothing store who I love to buy shirts off (and have them shipped to oz). Doc mentioned to me that Sportsgirl have a sticker on their front windows at the moment that features two kissing birds very similar to that on threadless.

Checking out the sportsgirl website, there is only two possibilities.

a) Sportsgirl is about to start selling threadless clothing.
b) Sportsgirl have been stealing designs.

The colours are almost identical (within one hex value on a few), the shape is very similar, the pose identical. I suspect in the storefront version the wing decoration could also be the same. The image I have below was is a zoomed in copy of an image less then fifty by fifty pixels.

Thoughts? Anyone want to get me a picture of a store?

September 11, 2002?

August 10th, 2006 at 8:56 am by johnsee (Around the World)

SOME 30 per cent of Americans cannot say in what year the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks against New York’s World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in Washington took place, according to a poll published in the Washington Post newspaper.

While the country is preparing to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the attacks that claimed nearly 3000 lives and shocked the world, 95 per cent of Americans questioned in the poll were able to remember the month and the date of the attacks.

But when asked what year, 30 per cent could not give a correct answer.

Of that group, six per cent gave an earlier year, eight per cent gave a later year, and 16 per cent admitted they had no idea whatsoever.

This memory black hole is essentially the problem of the older crowd - 48 per cent of those who did not know were between the ages of 55 and 64, and 47 per cent were older than 65, the poll shows.

The Post telephone survey was carried out July 21-24 among 1002 randomly selected adults. The margin of error is plus or minus three percentage points.
