Would Liquids on a Plane Really Work?

August 18th, 2006 at 8:00 am By johnsee (Around the World, Tech & Science)

Once the plane is over the ocean, very discreetly bring all of your gear into the toilet. You might need to make several trips to avoid drawing attention. Once your kit is in place, put a beaker containing the peroxide / acetone mixture into the ice water bath (Champagne bucket), and start adding the acid, drop by drop, while stirring constantly. Watch the reaction temperature carefully. The mixture will heat, and if it gets too hot, you’ll end up with a weak explosive. In fact, if it gets really hot, you’ll get a premature explosion possibly sufficient to kill you, but probably no one else.

After a few hours - assuming, by some miracle, that the fumes haven’t overcome you or alerted passengers or the flight crew to your activities - you’ll have a quantity of TATP with which to carry out your mission. Now all you need to do is dry it for an hour or two.

god thats lame… a few hours is too long, and what kind of person would do chemistry for hours at 35,000 ft?

If you think about it, if the crew noticed the fumes over the pacific or atlantic ocean it’d be too late. There would probably be no where to land in time and no way of deactivating the chemical reaction. At that point in time you’d be screwed… it’s just a thought. But you make a good point Dan.. and yeah it is pretty lame.

*This is my attempt to distract myself from uni work.. because I swear there are already enough people studying the prevention of heart attacks… aren’t there?*

    more distraction:
In light of the terror threat a local radio station asked listeners to call in with their bad experiences on planes. One guy called up with a story that went kind of like this:
He and his partner were on a flight coming into land in egypt. The plane was on a sharp descent and the passengers were rather alarmed by it, which wasn’t helped by an egyptian woman at the back of the plane screaming an unidentified phrase repeatedly. The plane finally came down kangaroo hopping and bouncing everywhere. As the passengers left the aircraft the man asked another passenger what the woman had been screaming. Translated she said:
“No survivors! No survivors! No survivors!”
It’s times like these you’d be thankful for language barriers.

You’re allowed to bring two lighters on board aswell as matches so lighting it wouldn’t be a problem. Sercuirty was pretty tight before this UK thing, but i remember once in Africa they just searched our bags by hand cuz they didn’t have any x-rays. That was in zimbabwe by the way, before the socio-political downfall, so i guess now it would be even easier to take things through.
