  1. You have to get noticed to get promoted.
  2. You have to get noticed to get hired.
  3. It really impresses people when you say "Oh, I've written about that, just google for XXX and I'm on the top page" or "Oh, just google my name."
  4. No matter how great you are, your career depends on communicating. The way to get better at anything, including communication, is by practicing. Blogging is good practice.
  5. Bloggers are better-informed than non-bloggers. Knowing more is a career advantage.
  6. Knowing more also means you're more likely to hear about interesting jobs coming open.
  7. Networking is good for your career. Blogging is a good way to meet people.
  8. If you're an engineer, blogging puts you in intimate contact with a worse-is-better 80/20 success story. Understanding this mode of technology adoption can only help you.
  9. If you're in marketing, you’ll need to understand how its rules are changing as a result of the current whirlwind, which nobody does, but bloggers are at least somewhat less baffled.
  10. It's a lot harder to fire someone who has a public voice, because it will be noticed.

Uni

Its been a while since I last blogged. Actually... thats a lie. It has been ages. Especially since at one stage I was blogging more or less daily. I've been busy though, especially in the last week... huge life changes (uni... hello) and I just havent given much thought to wacking any of my adventures out.

I skipped O week. A friend of minegot me a job working on a superyacht for a week. It was super. 111 foot long called silvertip. If you don't know how big a 111 foot yacht is... its well... I think I could safely say we would be lucky to see one yacht a year of that size in Brisvegas. Owned by an extremelly wealthy (and apparently nice) man overseas somewhere, the boat is decked well... nicely. (Think plasma tvs... red leather... wood panelling... lcd monitors everywhere... carbon fibre... silk carpet... you get the idea) I did mostly shit jobs... holding things... painting things... but I had a great time and managed to make myself a bit of money for 6 days hard work. They sail out (the crew) this week back to there tough life (fiji then french polenysia i think) But kudos to all the guys for a great week on board. Kudos to andrew the cook, who with canned chicken and what little food had been on the boat from a previous voyage made the BEST curry I have ever tasted, even if they werent usual curry ingrediants.

With my newfound wealth (hah!) I went car shopping today (oops... there was uni in there somewhere too). Well, Dad and I shouldn't go shoping together. I think we both know it too. After one day of shopping for a car and looking at umm... 3... I now have a deposit down on a car. It is however, exactly what I was looking for... and IMHO, extremely cool. Kia Mentor. It'll be nice to finially have something to just zip around in.

It looks like I might be heading to Hobart in a few weeks for the Teams Racing National Titles. The guys had a crew pull out and decided to invite me, and Im trying to toss up whether to go. It'll be hell good fun, and nice to see a few people from the nats earlier this year... and if we do well the team could end up at the worlds (america (fuckyea)) but it all depends if it clashes with uni. I'll have to see. So to uni...

I started my course last week, a dual degree of Communication Design and IT. I love 2 subjects and despise the two others. Bring on web, 3d and graphic design... but coverting binary to octal? I'll be right!!! Its a big change from school but I am loving it. Its a good chance to make new friends and a far way away from alot of the bullshit at old (unnamed) school. Eager to do wqell at Uni I am skipping the day tomorrow (oops) Instead though, I am off to do a defensive driving course, which should be a shiteload of fun. So yeah... I do have a lot going on... the one thing I do have to rectify is the alcahol in the fridge situation. As doc can testify, on more then one occasion I have had to have cold alcahol, even though I want water, because I have none cold. Thats my random bit of blogging for tonight. Until tomorrow, next week, next year...
