First Doom Movie Review: Maybe they pulled it off?

October 19th, 2005 at 8:38 am by johnsee (Movies)

Doom Movie The Rock

IGN has one of the first reviews online for the new Doom movie starring The Rock. Now, as much as all the trailers wanted me to stab my eyes out with a chainsaw, as the first person perspective looked like it was just a computer game, IGN seems to think they did a pretty good job of it:

Obviously, there will be two camps of people attending Doom: those who have played an installment of the storied (and at times much-maligned) game franchise, and those who have not. Those who have played Doom are likely to understand what makes the film cool, and those who have not might miss the boat. One thing is certain: Doom the movie makes a huge effort to stick to the things that make the game so popular: the first person perspective, the buckets of gore, and the gnarly weapons. These things are in abundance in the big screen adaptation, and they all delight.

Unfortunately, some of the other things that are present in the game are in ample supply in the movie as well: thin character development, cheesy dialogue and lack of story. That said, this is easily the best videogame-to-film adaptation yet (only the original Resident Evil approaches its production value), and a decent albeit standard action film if taken with a grain of salt.

The reason for the film’s modest success is that for the most part it honors its source material. Early rumors indicated that the film would not be set on Mars, the traditional site for Doom adventures, but this was corrected and ultimately well-implemented in the film. In fact, the transport to and from Earth to Mars becomes a central plot point throughout the film, and the effects involved in the transport are easily the best in the movie.

Titanic as a Horror Movie

October 3rd, 2005 at 11:56 pm by johnsee (Humour, Movies)

Titanic Horror MovieI’m surprised noone has ever thought to do this before, but this guy has remixed trailers in order to make them feel very different from the actual movie. This is quite ironic considering how often trailers seem to have a different idea to the actual movie, mainly due to the fact a seperate company often produces the trailer. Check them out, this guy is really good…

Titanic as a Horror

Westside Story as a Horror

The Shining as a Romantic Comedy

Who said rocks aren’t cool!

Reverse Rocks ThumbThis is an really interesting little short film, entirely filmed in reverse. It’s basically someone knocking over piles of rock, but when you put that in reverse and do it right… its pretty amazing.
It’s also strangely relaxing too.

SAW 2 ~ First Trailer Released

August 5th, 2005 at 6:01 pm by johnsee (Movies)

Saw was possibly one of the best movies I have ever seen. Top 5 without a doubt. It’s the one movie I don’t think anyone could at the end say… gee… I saw the end twist coming. I loved it…

I noticed today that the trailer for the second movie is online. The second movie continues to follow the dying villian of the movies ‘Jigsaw’, and Detective Eric Mason’s continuing attempts to track him down. If this movie is even half as good as the first, it’ll be a must see.

Doom Movie LogoThe first trailer for the upcoming doom movie has been released. The movie, loosely based on the highly sucessful video game follows the same basic storyline: When a Special Ops squadron answers a distress call from a science lab on the planet Olduvai, their investigation reveals that a series of mutant beings are systematically killing off the population there. Several of the characters names in the movie are actually developers of the computer game.

Family Guy Movie Leaked 2 Months Early (with screenshots)

July 25th, 2005 at 9:24 pm by Doc (Movies, Television)

For those of you who can’t wait till September to get a glimpse at just how hilarious Seth MacFarlane’s humour can be when untamed by the brutal censorship whips of the FCC, Stewie Griffin: The Untold Story has now appeared on a number of torrent tracking websites, and apparently it’s the real deal.

Yes, that’s right. Somehow the uncensored, straight-to-DVD movie has been released to the world of P2P sharing, more than 2 months before the official release date! Mad <3 to whoever did it, and just hope you don’t get caught.

Sorry Seth! We’ll still buy the DVD though! We in no way endorse downloading this at all. It was DVD sales that brought Family Guy back from its cancelled doom… so support the movie all the more when it’s released on DVD!

And now to go find myself a pair of clean pants – ones that don’t have a suspicious wet patch on them. What! I was excited, okay!?

Neheheheheh…. I’m priceless.

Please do NOT post any links to where these illegal files can be found on the internet. Sandstorming does not condone piracy in any form.

UPDATE: Slyck is running a news story about the origin of the file. It appears that the copy was ripped from a preview DVD. Check the article here.

Best. Headline. Ever.

July 20th, 2005 at 9:50 pm by Doc (Humour, Movies)

Maybe it’s just my dirty mind, but I could not stop laughing at this headline for the opening weekend of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Intentional or unintentional, respect to the Yahoo journo who came up with it.
Could have only been bettered if they threw in something about Willy Wonka and the obvious peverse puns you could make with his first name. Like this shirt from T-Shirt Hell.

Good News Everyone! Futurama Movie to soon be on the Way!

July 19th, 2005 at 11:36 am by johnsee (Movies, Television)

FuturamaWhilst reports appear to be sketchy, it appears even though the movie has not been given the green light, it’s damn close. Replying to a question in an audio interview John DiMaggio (The voice of Bender) is reported as saying the following:

Actually, I was at the 350th episode of The Simpsons party over at FOX and ran into David X. Cohen and Matt. And David said “Yeah, we’re gonna do some straight to DVD movies.” I said “all right, well, when I hear Matt say it I’ll know.” Then I said “Matt, what’s up? Give me the straight stuff.” And he said “Yeah”. So basically, I think what they’re gonna do is they’re gonna … do straight to DVD movies that’ll be on the air quality. And if FOX wants to put them on, Matt will be like “Guys, put’em on.” Looks like we’re gonna do it. I haven’t heard anything contract-wise or anything like that. So … anything can happen. But once I sign my name on the dotted line, I’ll be singing in the streets.

Billy West, the voice of Fry, Zoidberg and the professor is also reported to have stated that the project has been greenlit with another audio interview, this time with IGN.

Whilst all this seems to confirm that a movie is in the works, gotfuturama, one of the leading sources of Futurama news, says that David X. Cohen has NOT been given the greenlight yet. The movie seems close though!

More Family Guy Feature Movie Information!

July 12th, 2005 at 6:50 pm by johnsee (Movies, Television)

The Family Guy Movie, previously talked about by us here, is now nearing its release, and so we wanted to get in and share all the goss about it with you!

In this exclusive DVD premiere, Stewie, the maniacal baby genius, is distracted from his plans for world domination when he sees a man who looks just like him on television. Convinced that this man must be his real father (after all, how could he possibly share genetic material with the dimwitted Peter?), Stewie sets off on a cross-country road trip to find him. But his incredible journey leads him to discoveries far more vile and shocking than anything found in his diaper.

A press release has been issued, giving perhaps, the best look into the movie so far:

CENTURY CITY, Calif. – Things are guaranteed to get wilder, raunchier and funnier in Quahog when Fox Home Entertainment releases Seth MacFarlane’s first full-length unrated DVD feature in “FAMILY GUY PRESENTS STEWIE GRIFFIN: THE UNTOLD STORY! on September 27. In this exclusive, side-splittingly funny DVD premiere, Stewie, the maniacal baby genius, is distracted from his plans for world domination when he has a near-death experience. A great deal of booze and major drama follows, as Peter gets fired from his personal-opinion segment on the local news for being a lousy parent and Stewie takes a road trip to find his real dad. Shattering TV DVD sales records “Family Guy sold over 4 million combined units with the release of its first two DVD volumes and Family Guy: The Freakin’ Sweet Collection, and returned to FOX this year as part of the network’s Sunday night “Animation Domination line-up. The single-disc DVD features over 80 minutes of new never-before-seen “Family Guy content.

NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA NA BATMAN?

June 25th, 2005 at 4:21 pm by johnsee (Movies, Tech & Science)

NEW YORK - Dark clouds have gathered over Gotham. Crime is rampant, despair is widespread and no one is safe. Who will rescue the metropolis from itself, fight the forces of evil and save the good people of the city?

Why don’t you do it?

Forbes has a fricking cool article on what you’d have to do to actually become batman. Remember… he isn’t superhuman… he’s not like spiderman or superman… he’s just an ordinary guy with a lot of money.
